Next ARA Event : May Madness on Starch Green

Saturday 17th May 2025, 11am - 4pm

We’re inviting the local community to come together to celebrate all things Spring on Starch Green, at the corner of Askew Road & Goldhawk Road.

The World-Famous Hammersmith Morris will be kicking things off at 11am, opening our family-friendly, fun and feel-good community event.

If you miss the first, there are two more opportunities to watch, and maybe join in with the Hammersmith Morris at 11.30am and 12 noon. They have a jam-packed May, waving their handkerchiefs & whacking sticks so we are very pleased they are able to come and perform on our little patch of green in W12, and we don’t want you to miss out!

Maypole Dancing, called by one of the Morris Men will be at 12.30pm, where if you haven’t joined in yet we will be asking all of Askew, young & old to take up a place around the Maypole.

Everything else showcasing the wonderful businesses & organisations we have in the immediate area around Starch Green:

Kids games and activities by The Sulgrave Club, face-painting by Portico, Flower bike, filled with blooms & wines to taste by Stems & Vines, Greenside School home-bake, bubble tea tasting and coffee by Mine Bubble Tea House, pop-up Dr Bike session, and plenty more*.

May Madness on Starch Green is being organised by Askew Road Association with the support of LBH&F, and local businesses including Arthur’s Coffee House | CP Architects | Chinese Medicine Yard | Mine Bubble Tea House | James Hayes | Apple Estates | Gazzab | Starch Green | Stems & Vines | Sulgrave Club | Portico

*some details may change due to unforeseen circumstances.

In addition to everything happening on the green, we also have 3 further events happening in and around Starch Green as part of this Spring Celebration in our community:

Stems & Vines are hosting local calligrapher Laura Edralin and London-based watercolour artist Eve Leoni at the Askew Gallery for a Spring Florals workshop.

Join in at either 1pm or 5pm for this special “ink & paint & sip” masterclass with floral arrangements by S&Vs inspiration, a welcome drink to get the creative juices flowing and goodies to take home, as well as your piece of artwork. Tickets available below:

Ready to connect with nature? On the evening of Saturday 17th there will be a Batwalk in Ravenscourt Park led by Paul Schifferes. Meeting at 9pm at the tennis courts at the south end of the park (near the railway arches) Paul will lead the walk using his bat detector to find and identify bats - hopefully. The walk will end at around 9.45pm.

Tickets are free but spaces are limited, so please register below, fund raising donations for the Askew Road Association are welcome, when you book your spot.

If you need further immersion in nature join Andrew Peel on his Dawn Chorus Walk at 5.30am on Sunday 18th May. Meeting at the double gates to Ravenscourt Park on Paddenswick Road, Andrew will lead a walk around the park to experience the beauty of birdsong, the sound of Spring as birds sing to establish their territories and attract mates.

The walk will end around 7am - remember to wrap up warm as mornings can still be chilly in May. Bring binoculars if you have them.

Tickets are free but spaces are limited, so please register below, fund raising donations for the Askew Road Association are welcome, when you book your spot.

The new gallery, run by CP Architects Matt & Warren aims to exhibit new and interesting work, with a special interest in local artists.

For the Love of Flowers was definitely one of the events of the year - with over 150 people at the private view - the event was a smash!

Taste of Askew

Our June 2023 Taste of Askew was our ‘trial run’ - 3 restaurants - Burnt, Detour & Giulia’s (with wine by Askew Wine), with a course at each one. 3 groups of diners moving after each course led by a host to the next dining experience. Booking was via Event Bright (organised by Philippa Smith).

So proof of concept successful - it’s something we are now planning the next 3 with different combinations of restaurants - an ideal introduction to the incredible quality of food available on Askew Road!

Promoting Askew Road Businesses

We are keen to promote all the businesses on Askew Road. We have already started a campaign (as featured in the Askew Magazine) for businesses to work together to promote their services together - research suggests customers appreciate the hub-like nature of a local high street. Somewhere that satisfies all your needs - like our DIY/home improvement hub, our beauty and wellbeing hub, our fun for kids hub, our amazing range of restaurants and cafes, or our cradle to grave hub.

That’s before we mention the 5 estate agents, the pubs, the churches, the national supermarkets, the convenience stores, the gift shops, the butchers, the bakers - and for everything else we have Del’s!
